This oil by Carl Ahrens measures 41 x 32 inches and was painted between 1908 and 1911, likely in Toronto or Leith, Ontario. It was originally owned by General Malcolm S. Mercer, and was exhibited in the Public Reference Library (Toronto) in October of 1911. Upon Mercer's death in 1916, the painting passed to his brother, Frederick. In 1928 this painting was auctioned by the Jenkins Galleries of Toronto. It was lot # 426, and sold for $510. This painting appeared at the 1937 Memorial Exhibition of Selected Works by Carl Ahrens held at Mellors Galleries. The listed dimensions (40 x 30) differ slightly from those given at the time of the 1928 auction. The painting was priced at $900. There is a possibility that this painting was auctioned off by Pinneys (Montreal) in 1987. The listing was for a painting called "View of the Mill Through the Trees" and it was only slightly off on dimensions. If it is the same painting, it sold for $2400 at that time.
