Birthplace of Carl Ahrens

Carl Henry von Ahrens was born in Winfield, Ontario on February 14th, 1862. This marker and a few houses are about the extent of the village today. Most sources say Winfield is close to Elora, but it is much closer to Floradale and not easily found. When Ahrens was born here, his parents, Herman and Isabella, lived with one of Isabella's brothers. While it is likely he returned to Winfield throughout childhood, his immediate family soon moved to the much larger town of Berlin (now Kitchener) to live with Carl's paternal grandmother and various aunts, uncles, and cousins.
