Carl Ahrens' Birthplace

This is about as exciting as Winfield, Ontario gets. Today the hamlet is literally a handful of houses, and it has long since disappeared from any map. It would never have been found without the determination of Ontario artist Rick Taylor, who snapped this photo. Most sources say Winfield is close to Elora, but in reality it is much closer to Floradale. Ahrens was born here, when his parents, Herman and Isabella, lived with one of his maternal uncles. While it is likely he came back here throughout childhood, his family soon moved to the much larger town of Berlin (now Kitchener) to live with Carl's paternal grandmother and various aunts, uncles, and cousins.
